To mark the official opening of big Rock we have organised a great day of events with something for everybody, whether you are already a climber or just want to come along and see what goes on in a modern climbing centre.
Entry on the day will be half price for all registered climbers at big Rock which includes free entry to the fun comp & subsidised rates for the Masterclasses. Non-climbers are welcome to come in for free to see what's on offer & are very welcome to have a go on one of the supervised 'drop in' sessions. 10am - formal opening First off will be a visit by the Mayor of Milton Keynes at 10am, who is expected to have a climb on the new wall under the watchful eyes of one of our high profile guest celebrity climbers, Dave Macleod. Dave MacLeod Masterclass In between climbing some extremely hard routes Dave Macleod is an accomplished climbing coach and has recently written the training book 9 out of 10 climbers make the same mistakes. Dave's approach is guaranteed to make you think about your climbing in a fresh way which could help you break through to the next grade. the sessions are as follows: 10.30am - 12.30pm 1.30pm - 3.30pm 4.30pm - 6.30pm Subsidised rate of £20 per 2 hour session - places are limited so please book in advance. Participants must be registered climbers with big Rock. Tim Emmett Masterclass It's pretty much guaranteed that Tim Emmett will be one of the most enthusiastic people you will ever meet. two hours with Tim will be a lesson in positive thinking, and if just a fraction of his enthusiasm rubs off then it will have been money well spent ? expect physical & mental exhaustion! 3.00pm - 5.00pm Subsidised price of £20 per 2 hour session - places are limited so please book in advance. Evening lectures 7.30pm ? 8.00pm Tim Emmett will talk about his adventures in Para Alpinism with some video footage that will leave you inspired but with some serious doubts about Tim's sanity. Dave MacLeod will talk about the routes that have led to him being regarded as the UK's best all round climber, from sea cliff adventures to winter ascents of E8 on Ben Nevis. For more information see: davemacleod.com 9.00 - 10.00pm ? the Usual Suspects: the highlight of the day will feature Dave & Tim talking about their recent ascent of a new route on Sron Uladail in the Outer Hebrides. the first ascent of this amazing new E9 7a was made on 28th August '10 and was filmed live by the BBC. It is already being heralded as the most significant live broadcast of a climb since Joe Brown & Chris Bonington were filmed climbing the Old Man of Hoy in the 1960's. Cost £6 adults, and £5 concessions/children, on the door ? no need for advance booking DMM stand DMM's marketing manager Chris Rowlands will be around all day with a small stand showing the latest gear from the UK's most innovative manufacturer of climbing hardware. the big Rock shop will be stocking selected items from DMM so this is your opportunity to talk to the manufacturers. Boreal stand & demo There will also be a small stand displaying Boreal climbing shoes and the opportunity to test out the latest Boreal boots. Boreal will be the main brand of rock boot that big Rock intends to sell in the shop. Fun Comp Registered climbers can have a free go at our fun comp, comprising of 12 new boulder problems (set specially for the day) and you can try them as many times as you want between 10am and 6pm on the day. Prizes will be performance based but with additional spot prizes for anyone that puts in a major effort or simply provides amusement for the rest of us...... Drop in climbing Non-climbers, adults and children, are very welcome to come along to watch and to see what big Rock has to offer. If you'd like to give it a try then we will have instructors lined up to give you a free go on one of the roped walls. During the day there will also be groups of young people from local Scouts groups enjoying Taster Sessions with big Rock instructors, and the big Rock Caf? will be open all day. Local Band Local and dynamic youngster rock band 'Switch' will be playing a mix of classic pieces, modern covers and some of their own composition, in the interludes between Masterclasses and lectures. bigrockclimbing.co.uk
